The Double Triple Looms.
Some have been asking, what the hell is Double Triple ByPass? Well the simple answer is fucking craziness. It is a new addition to Team Evergreens endurace ride that is the Colorado version of the Dealth Ride.
Over the past few years this ride has filled up in the first few days of registration. Due to the CDOT and CO State Patrol, TE has been limited to a certain number of partcipants. The ride has traditionally started in Evergreen and traveled over Squaw Pass (9700 ft) then Juniper Pass (11,140 ft) and then a bomber decent into the town of Idaho Springs. It would then make the march up i70 through Georgetown and then up to Loveland Pass (11,900ft). Another bomber desent past Keystone resort and then around Dillon Lake and over to Copper Mtn which is the base of Vail Pass (10,560 ft). A final screamer of a desent into and through Vail with the finish line in Avon. Summing up the old ride, 120 miles, 10,000 ft of climbing with 3-4 mtn passes.
This year the crazy cats at Team Evergreen raised the bar 10,000 and 122 miles, by adding the Double Triple ByPass. So you do the old ride and then the next morning you hop back on the bike and do the ride backwards. Fucking insane, right?
Right, so much so that my good buddy and fellow out side sales rep Jason Losey and I put in our bid to do this insane ride. The guidlines where simple, a lottery for 500 spots to do the DTBP and we were determined to get in.
On Feb 1, I got the email from TE and was jacked up to learn that I made it. Jason did too. And then I thought, now what the hell do I do? I guess I have to start training.
So in mid March I laid out my plan to do DTBP and started putting in the base miles. In 2003 when I did this the first time, I was living at sea level and the highest peak was 1100 feet. Not the best place to train for a ride that had 120 miles and 10,000 ft of climbing. I remember that day was one of the worst on the bike. The last 20k was like a death march. Please just make it end I would tell myself.
This year I was in a much better place. Living in CO and training for this ride has been a lot smoother until the 2nd weekend of April when I was hit by a car door while riding from my hotel to work at the Sea Otter. I was lucky to come away with only some cracked ribs and a chipped bone in my thumb. Lucky for me I was only side lined for 2 weeks.
Since then I have been logging as many miles as I can. Dragging my trusty FOCUS Izalco Team Replica all over the flipping place.
So here i come to today. Just 10 days away from the hardest event I have ever had the pleasure of participating in, and I am a little worried of the outcome. I know that everything will be fine. It is just the crazy thoughts that swim through your head as an event looms in the future.
In case you were at all curious, here is the course and the elevations. I will be represting my company, FOCUS Bikes USA and our co-sponsor for CX, RAPHA. Hope that we can get some pics uploaded to the inner webs during those 2 days by friends and family.
Wish me luck!
